Eighty percent of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities struggle to find meaningful work. In August 2023, Amy Philpott and Natalie Griffin set out to change that in their own way by co-founding Gerry’s Café. This non-profit coffee shop employs adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and provides its team with extensive training experience, teaching transferable job and life skills and paying competitive wages. Gerry's Cafe understands that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities often wait their whole life to find meaningful employment and throughout their lives get doors shut in their face. More than just a coffee shop, Gerry’s Café is a place that changes lives, and helps dreams come true by giving everyone a chance to shine. The proof is in the pudding, so to speak, as the 37 adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities employed at Gerry's Cafe actively contribute to the daily operations working the various jobs including barista, cashier, sandwich/salad maker, baking assistant, dishwasher and greeter. Amy and Natalie will share their fearless journey in starting a unique business in the northwest suburbs of Chicago and offer ideas and suggestions on hiring the “unhirable”, which will enrich your own business beyond measure.
Natalie Griffin, Co-Founder & Board President, Gerry’s Café
As a former Special Education teacher, Natalie spent years helping young adults with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, and a variety of other medical conditions prepare for the next phase in their lives. Despite the fact that her students had massive potential, they weren’t getting hired. Natalie was continually disappointed by the lack of businesses that were willing to take a chance on individuals with incredible potential, work ethic, and passion.
So she decided to do something about it. Relying on her work, volunteer, and entrepreneurial experience, she set out to open Gerry’s Café with Amy, providing adults with disabilities a place to work, receive fair financial compensation, and feel valued in the community for their “abilities”.

Amy's desire to give back after decades of serving her real estate clients and wine bar customers demonstrates her deep commitment to her community. Honoring her late Aunt Gerry and leaning on her restaurant expertise, she co-founded Gerry’s Café.
